The waterways in Southcentral Alaska provide plenty of excitement and action-filled adventure. Choose from adventurous river rafting to leisurely float trips in the surrounding area. Hop aboard the Glacier Discovery Train up the Placer River Valley to the Spencer Glacier Whistlestop. Jump in a Canoe or Raft to Experience Spencer Glacier’s Icebergs up close! Get lost in Spencer Lake’s Iceberg Maze. Touch an iceberg & relax as your raft guide rows you through icebergs on Spencer Lake and down the pristine Placer River Valley. Perfect for all ages as guests are not required to paddle. Float includes a spirited Class I rapid underneath the longest freestanding trestle bridge in the USA. Professional guides, rain gear, rubber boots, drinks and hearty AK snack are provided. Warm clothing recommended.
Chugach Adventures will provide transportation for Hotel Alyeska guests from Hotel Alyeska to Portage Train Station. This will include a stop at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center prior to boarding the train at the Portage Station.
This trip is 6-7 hours
This six-mile scenic adventure offers panoramic views while rafting through the peaceful Portage Valley. The trip starts with a visit to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center to view moose, black and brown bear, caribou, wood bison and more. Visit the Portage Glacier Visitor Center where guests can learn about glaciers while your guide rigs the raft. From there, the raft launches from the end of Portage Lake for a scenic float trip. Guides will row down the river on this trip so that guests can relax and enjoy the landscape. This is a perfect float for all ages.
Trip is three to four hours
Upgrade the Portage River Float trip and experience a salmon dinner cooked riverside. This is the perfect opportunity to enjoy an authentic Alaskan meal under Alaska’s famous midnight sun. Stop on a gravel beach alongside the river where a delicious salmon bake dinner awaits. The menu includes Alaska Sockeye Salmon, pasta salad with pesto and roasted peppers, Caesar salad, garlic bread, triple chocolate brownie and hot drinks. Vegetarian and children menu options also available with advance notice. A leisurely pace allows for plenty of sightseeing and photo opportunities.

For an introduction to Alaska rafting, this trip is perfect for families and groups. There seldom is whitewater on this creek, however, the creek moves fast and offers narrow sections for a taste of adventure.
For the more adventurous, this trip consists of the first two canyons of Six Mile. Both canyons are rated Class IV. The third canyon can be added to the trip upon finishing the first two; this adds about an hour to the trip. All guests will take a practice swim in a calmer stretch of the creek.
For a full-on rafting adventures, this trip takes guests through all three canyons of the Six Mile. The first and second canyon at Class IV and the third canyon is Class V. All three canyons offer big waves and drops in a very narrow gorge. All guests will take a practice swim in a calmer stretch of the creek.

For all trips above, a full whitewater dry suit, life jacket, helmet and river shoes will be provided to all guests.
Guests will choose between a paddle raft and an oar boat. With the paddle raft you will be doing the paddling.
