Backcountry Touring

Exploring the backcountry of Alaska on skis is one of best ways to see the wilderness less traveled. We recommend a guided adventure.

Learn to Backcountry Ski

Head out with AMGA ski-mountaineering certified guide Joe Stock to learn introductory to advanced-level backcountry skiing skills. We teach according to the national standards set by the American Mountain Guides Association (AMGA) and American Institute for Avalanche Research and Education (AIARE). These one-day courses are offered November to May. The course is designed for intermediate to advanced skiing skills.

1:1 $400, 2:1 $250, 3:1 $250 per person per day


Guided Backcountry Skiing 

Find the best backcountry snow and terrain with a local guide. Our guests range from beginners with in-bounds experience to those with decades of touring experience around the world. On multi-day tours we will venture far from the roadside crowds and into the untracked backcountry.

Guided backcountry ski tours offered November to May. We recommend intermediate to advanced skiing skills, and previous winter camping experience for multi-day tours.

1:1 $400, 2:1 $250, 3:1 $250


Ski Guide Training

This course is geared toward experienced backcountry skiers who want to learn professional-level backcountry skills and guiding techniques. This is an advanced course and offered December 12-13, 2009 and February 27-28, 2010.

Assessment Down-Guiding
Rescue Techniques
Field Notebook

Skill Level/Prerequisites:
Participants must have advanced area ski ability
2 years of backcountry experience
Level 1 avalanche education or equivalent
All personal backcountry ski gear.
