Alyeska Resort’s Lift Access Downhill Mountain Biking Season Continues Through Monday, October 14
July 31, 2013 (Girdwood, AK) – Alyeska Resort is excited to grow on its success in offering downhill biking trails for avid mountain bikers. Due to sunny, warm weather conditions during the early part of biking season, Alyeska Resort has experienced record numbers of riders in the Alyeska Bike Park. Opening day for biking season took place on July 4 and operations will continue through October 14, 2013.
Lift-accessed downhill mountain biking offers lift loading hours between 12:00 P.M. and 6:00 P.M. on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays plus the holiday Mondays of September 2 and October 14. Bikers are able to load their bikes onto the Bear Cub Quad and Ted’s Express to access the downhill mountain biking trails. The Tram is scheduled to open for biking after Labor Day.
From the Daylodge Bike Hub, guests are able to rent downhill-specific bicycles with helmets and pads, from Kona Bicycles (www.konaworld.com). Other hard-tail mountain bikes are available for rent at the Daylodge location for the Girdwood Bike Path and non-lift accessed trails along the lower mountain. The rental shop also offers bike repair services and other bike-related accessories and parts.
Hungry bikers can refuel and “après bike” at the Sitzmark Bar & Grill. The Sitzmark is open on a complementary schedule to biking, with service starting at 12:00 P.M. Fridays through Sundays plus holiday Mondays during the bike season.
Riders can purchase a summer season-long bike pass valid July 4 to October 14, 2013 for $250 (adults ages 19 and over) and $200 for students (ages 10-18), seniors (ages 60 & over), military and college students. Those who have purchased or renewed their 2013/14 Season Pass for skiing can purchase an add-on bike option for $150. The day bike ticket rate is $25.
Alyeska Resort is offering ‘Friday Specials’ to help participants become familiar with the Bike Park, featuring half price bike rentals for a half-day (3:00 P.M. – 6:00 P.M.) with purchase of a bike lift ticket. Riders can also join a free one-hour familiarization tour of the Bike Park on Fridays at 1:00 P.M.
The resort also offers introduction style clinics to riders wishing to improve their skills on the biking trails. The two hour lessons with certified instructors will focus on proper stance, body control and motion as well as downhill riding techniques. The lessons are recommended for novice and intermediate riders and can be booked in the Daylodge Bike Hub.
Helmets will be required for all riders and are available for rent at the Daylodge Bike Hub for $5. The minimum age to participate in lift-assisted biking is 10, and riders that are 18 years of age and younger will need to have a parent or guardian present to sign a liability release form. For more information, please go to AlyeskaResort.com.
The resort has experienced a busy season on its mountain trails this summer due to construction of a new high-speed quad chairlift replacing existing Chair 6. The resort recommends that bikers call the Mountain Hotline (907-754-7669) to receive the latest trail updates, chairlift operations and construction closure information.
