Alyeska Resort and Owner John Byrne Awarded ESGR “Seven Seals Award” for Support of Military Programs
May 23, 2012 (Girdwood, Alaska) – John J. Byrne III and Alyeska Resort received the “Seven Seals Award” at the Girdwood 2020 annual banquet on April 21,2012, which hosted 220 business and professional guests at the occasion. The award is an honorarium made by ESGR-Employer Support of the Guard andReserve- and the Department of Defense. It is given in thanks for, and in honor of, outstanding support of our military by an employer. Girdwood 2020 is a community, non-profit organization that is an advocate for the development of Girdwood, Alaska as an ‘International Four Season Resort’.
The presentation was made by Major Dan Sullivan USMCR, Commissioner of the Alaska Department of Natural Resources and Commanding Officer, Delta Company, Anti-Terrorist Battalion, 4th Marine Division.
The award, depicting the heraldry seals of the seven military services, is given at the discretion of the National ESGR chairman to recognize the efforts of a citizen, business, or organization, whose supportive actions have benefited all of the Reserve Components in a significant manner. Recipients of this award do not necessarily employ Reservists, but have demonstrated outstanding support, commitment, and extreme patriotism to the United States military.
Alyeska Resort has seven hundred employees and this ESGR award was given in appreciation of their “Military Monday” program as well as their largess in hosting of Yellow Ribbon and other family retreats for Alaskan Guard and Reserve units at departure or upon return from deployment.
Each month during ski season “Military Monday” offers free skiing for all Guard, Reserve, Active duty, Veterans, and their families. There are also discounts available for equipment, food, and hotel rooms as well as entertainment specifically geared for their enjoyment. Since March 2009 (when the program was introduced) Alyeska Resort has provided approximately 9,000 free ski tickets to service members and their families.
About Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (www.esgr.org)
Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) is a Department of Defence agency established in 1972. The mission of ESGR is to gain and maintain employer support for Guard and Reserve service by recognizing outstanding support, increasing awareness of the law, and resolving conflicts through informal mediation. ESGR volunteers provide free education, consultation, and mediation for employers of Guard and Reserve service members. As the 1.3 million members of the National Guard and Reserve servicemen and women continue to perform countless missions that require extraordinary actions on the part of everyday citizens, ESGR will continue to be the informational agency for the employers of citizen warriors.
