June 26, 2012 (Girdwood, Alaska) – The increasing level of activity along the scenic Seward Highway is a sure-sign that summer has arrived in Southcentral Alaska. For many locals, this also means its opening season for visiting friends and family, sometimes for weeks at a time. Alyeska Resort encourages locals to send their loved ones to Girdwood where white-capped mountain peaks of the Chugach Mountains and an abundance of outdoor activities can be enjoyed with little-to-no-stress.
Whether your guests need overnight accommodations or convenient day activities, the resort offers a variety of options for all ages and interests. The 60-passenger scenic aerial tram operates daily, rising up to 2,300 feet in elevation where guests can view hanging glaciers and tour the historic Roundhouse Museum. The scenic tram operates from 9:30 A.M. to 9:30 P.M. and the ride takes around five minutes. Tickets for the tram are available at The Hotel Alyeska Tram Ticket Office. The resort offers rack cards featuring a special discount on tram tickets which are available throughout Southcentral Alaska at many visitor centers.
At the upper tram terminal, there are two dining options including lunch at the Glacier Express Cafeteria or dinner at the AAA Four Diamond recognized Seven Glaciers Restaurant. Seven Glaciers opens for daily at 5:00 P.M. With an advanced dining reservation, guests can ride the aerial tram for free. Reservations can be made online at OpenTable.com or by calling 907-754-2237.
Also available right at the resort, the expert guides of local outfitter The Ascending Path (www.theascendingpath.com) can take guests on a variety of guided hikes and tours including the popular rainforest or glacier hike. These guided tours offer technical instruction as well as knowledge of local flora and fauna and can be reserved at the Alyeska concierge desk or by calling 907-754-2108.
In addition to guided tours, there are many complimentary outdoor activities and day trips easily accessible from the resort. Nature trails for all levels of hikers and bikers starting right from the hotel courtyard including the popular Winner Creek Trail which offers a flat, boardwalk surface for the first ½ mile and offers an out-and-back option for a total of 5 miles. Later in the season, the 2.2 mile North Face Trail offers a moderate climb from the hotel to the upper tram terminal. All guests who hike to the top can ride the tram down for free. The tram also allows dogs to ride down in kennels provided by the resort.
For the truly adventurous, Alaska Paragliding (www.alaskaparagliding.com) offers tandem paragliding tours from the upper tram terminal with the best views of the valley.
