Recommended Safety MEasures

Thrills and excitement are an expected part of mountain-biking! However, sometimes this means injuries can happen. We strongly suggest that full face helmets, full length gloves, biking armor and a full suspension bike be used in the Bike Park. If you are new to the mountain-biking program at Alyeska Resort, or the Parent or Guardian of a younger rider, please familiarize yourself with the mountain-biking activities we offer. Introductory lessons and beginner terrain are available.

More challenging terrain and features should not be attempted unless the rider has the appropriate skills, experience and equipment to effectively negotiate such trail sections. Please speak with mountain concierge and bike park staff for more information on Alyeska Bike Park information.

  1. Familiarize yourself with the trail system and select rides within your ability level.
  2. Make sure that all bike components work properly.
  3. Helmets are required while riding. Gloves and protective clothing are recommended.
  4. Always ride with a buddy and be prepared for emergencies.
  5. Always stay in control and be able to stop or avoid other people or objects.
  6. Observe all posted signs and warnings and ride only on designated trails. Keep off closed trails and out of closed areas.
  7. Be courteous to other riders and pass only when it is safe.
  8. Be aware of obstacles and other on-mountain users.
  9. You must not stop where you obstruct a trail or are not visible from above.
  10. Respect the environment and wildlife.
  11. When entering a trail or starting downhill, you must look uphill and yield to other riders.

Prior to using any lift you must have the knowledge and ability to load, ride and unload safely. When in doubt, ask a lift operator.

All bikes riding in the Alyeska Bike Park must have one functioning brake per wheel. This keeps dirt jump bikes, BMX, kids with coaster brakes and beach cruisers off the trails but allows regular mountain bikes and mountain unicycles to ride on the hill.

Know the signs of the international trail marking system. They explain the degree and difficulty for each trail in relation to Alyeska.

The trails at Alyeska Resort are rough and demanding on both bike and body. Before riding always inspect your equipment or have it checked by a qualified bike mechanic.

  1. Ensure your helmet is in good shape and properly adjusted.
  2. Inspect bike frame for cracks and damaged or dented areas.
  3. Ensure you have sufficient brake pad to stop your bike while descending.
  4. Front and rear axles (skewers) should be tight.
  5. Headset and stem must be secure with no looseness or play.
  6. Check that your tires are in good condition, with no tears or cuts in the sidewalls.
  7. Handle bar and handle grips must be tight and unable to spin. Seat and seat post need to be fastened securely.

The Alyeska Bike Park is a significantly different experience from cross country riding. The trails require constant physical and mental effort in order for all riders to maintain control.

CLOTHING: Protective clothing and equipment is mandatory for young riders. The best protection from abrasion requires a properly fitted full-faced helmet, gloves, long pants, long sleeves, leg armor, arm armor and solid running shoes.

EQUIPMENT: The Bike Park trails are specifically designed for full suspension mountain bikes. The trails are rocky, bumpy and become much more difficult without high quality suspension. Without full suspension, fatigue becomes a factor much sooner. The steep grades necessitate disc brakes for adequate stopping power. Cantilever brakes will increase the fatigue factor as more effort will be required to maintain control. All Bike Park participants should ride a properly sized bike and should be able to stand over the seat with their feet flat on the ground. A bike that is too large or with a high seat post increases the risk of injury.

TRAILS: The level of risk increases with the level of difficulty. Black trails often have significant drops and jumps that require skill and experience to navigate. Many difficult trails have a “filter” feature at the top designed to keep riders with insufficient skills off trails that will be beyond their ability, do not ride around these features. Young riders become a hazard to other riders if they are unable to ride a trail or move out of the way. Children should be accompanied by an adult at all times and should be monitored for fatigue regularly.

LIFTS: Boarding the lift requires significant strength when loading a bike and children may require assistance. Lift attendants are there to help load and unload bikes.

QUESTIONS: If you have any questions, please let us know and we will put you in contact with either one of our Bike Park Patrol or Bike park Guides.

While on the slopes, you will see people using alpine skis, telemark skis, snowboards, and other snow play equipment such as snow skates, snow bikes and adaptive ski gear. You will see skiers of all levels – from beginners enjoying their first day on the slopes to expert skiers with years of experience. It is always your responsibility, regardless of the equipment used or the level of skier that you are, to be courteous to others and to be aware that skiing safely makes the ski slopes safer for all of us.

Alyeska is a large mountain with difficult and dangerous terrain and skiing and riding are dangerous sports.  We do our best to inform guests of the possible hazards associated with snow sports. We do our best to mark hazards and dangerous terrain appropriately. We also actively open and close certain areas of the mountain often due to Snow Safety considerations, ski conditions, or darkness

Our beginner ski zones and high skier traffic areas are important to us and we refer to these areas as “Slow” zones. We label them as such on our trail maps and with signs and banners as you ski through each of these areas. We encourage guests to ‘Go with the Flow’ in these areas, ski only as fast as the skier next to you. Our least favorite part of the job is to be the police on the mountain. We do our best to keep an eye on people skiing around to ensure everyone is skiing safely and within their limits.

Alyeska has set Enforcement Guidelines based on the Skier Responsibility Code and Mountain Safety Concerns for behavior on the mountain. Alyeska operates under a lease through the Department of Natural Resources which requires the resort to enforce violations of state statute. Violations of the Alaska skier safety act or other state laws can be referred to DNR and may lead to a citation. In addition to loss of lift privileges and fines we also require all ‘violators’ to take the Mountain Education Test, a tool used to help educate.
