The tram takes you up the mountain faster in the winter to get eager skiers on the slopes; but whether you’re going back down on skis or on the tram, the thick blanket of snow covering everything you can see is a sight to behold. From an elevation of 2300 feet, the frosty Turnagain Arm is foreboding in the distance, you can almost see the seven “hanging” glaciers growing again and the peaks of the Chugach Mountain range seem to blend into one endless peak as you gaze inland. Winter at the top of the world is a calm, quiet reminder of the power of Alaska’s natural wonders.
The Aerial Tram operates daily during the winter season from December through April. The tram closes for scheduled maintenance from late April through mid-May. Summer operations run daily from mid-May through September. The tram is closed during October and November.
Tram Facts
The Alyeska Tramway, designed by Von Roll Tramways, Inc. of Switzerland, has a regenerative drive system. AC power is converted to DC, allowing the tram to operate at varying speeds—slow for scenic rides and fast for powder days.
In the winter, the tram operates at full speed to get eager skiers on the slopes. In the summer, enjoy the natural beauty of the area and to spot wildlife. The tram operates two cars on a counterweight system—as one car goes up the other car comes down.

- Maximum Speed: 26 miles per hour (42 kilometres per hour)
- Average Time: 4 minutes in the winter and up to 7 minutes in the summer
- Capacity: Each of the two cars holds a maximum of 40 persons. The maximum in the winter is 800 persons per hour.
- Elevation Lower Tram Terminal: 306 feet (93 meters)
- Upper Tram Terminal: 2,334 feet (711 meters)
- Vertical Rise: 2,025 feet (617 meters)
- Length of Span: 3,869 feet (1179 meters)

Winter hours are 11:30am – 6:00pm daily, and until 8pm during night skiing operations (Thursday – Saturday on select dates)

You will receive one email containing all of your tickets.
Pull up your Tram Ticket QR Code
Check and make sure your brightness is all the way up to make your ticket easier to scan. Have your ticket out and ready to scan when you get to the Tram gates!
Scan your ticket & enjoy the ride!
The ticket scanner is located under the display screen on the tram gate. Hold your QR Ticket up to the scanner and wait for the display screen to turn green.
