A 6-hour full day adventure, from mountain glacier headwaters to the Turnagain Arm ocean. Access the remote glaciated Chugach Mountains with Alpine Air Alaska; there is no better view than from a Robinson R44 helicopter. Buzz the Twenty Mile Glacier and see the grand scope of the Chugach Mountains. Land on the iceberg laden Twenty-Mile Lake for your private raft adventure down Twenty Mile River. Float 12 stunning miles downriver to an ocean pick-up on Turnagain Arm at the Seward Highway. Keep a good look out for wildlife: bears, moose, bald eagles, and salmon.

Helicopter Glacier Hike, Ice Climbing and Caves

Helicopter Glacier Hike

Ascending Path's Helicopter Glacier Landing and Guided Hike with Crampons is a trip of a lifetime! From the magnificent Hotel Alyeska in Girdwood, or in Portage if coming down by the fabulous Alaska Railroad- we group up – and take a short ride in a Sprinter van to our private landing zone in Portage Valley. After a heli safety briefing we hot load for a memorable scenic flight of about 10 minutes one way. Everyone has a window seat!After landing on glacier ice, we gear-up with helmets and crampons. Once the heli leaves, and after a safety talk and crampon practice with your skilled and experienced guide, we explore the glacier ice itself. We typically have 1.5 hours to discover amazing Ice features like: blue ice, crevasses, caves, rushing surface rivers, tubes, moulins, etc. This trip is suitable for ages 10 and older.

Helicopter Ice Climbing & Caves

In partnership with Alpine Air Alaska, Ascending Path offers Heli access guided glacier caves and ice climbs.The Robinson R44 Helicopter has an outstanding safety record, are affordable, quiet and fuel efficient. Rates listed are per person.From the magnificent Hotel Alyeska in Girdwood, or in Portage if coming down by the fabulous Alaska Railroad- we group up – and take a short ride in a Sprinter van to our private landing zone in Portage Valley. After a heli safety briefing we hot load for a memorable scenic flight of about 10 minutes one way. Everyone has a window seat!

After landing on glacier ice, and once the heli leaves, we do a safety talk and crampon practice with your skilled and experienced guide. We typically schedule several hours to climb and discover amazing Ice features like: blue ice, crevasses, caves, rushing surface rivers, tubes, moulins, etc. Your guide will lead you to ice walls where a top rope anchor is set up to experience vertical ice climbing. You will finally feel the rush of what it’s like to be Spiderman when scaling ice walls. And then there’s the ice caves….! This trip is suitable for ages 13 and older.

  • Top roped glacier ice climbing experience on ice walls.
  • No experience is necessary. This trip should be considered a “moderate activity”. We recommend that you are capable of a few hours of cardio and/or strength training exercise each day. Previous rock or climbing gym experience is recommended.
  • Trips are weather dependent
  • Roughly 2 hours spent on the glacier
  • Seat weight limit is 250 lbs per passenger
