Since the discovery of the pristine Alaska Range, home of North America's highest peak Denali, mountaineers have considered climbing in Alaska to be the pinnacle of one's climbing career. For the rest of us, Alyeska offers a variety of ways to test your own climbing skills with the safety and expertise of local climbing guides. The rugged and unique terrain of the Girdwood valley offers rock climbing just minutes from the Hotel Alyeska. Ice climbing trips take place nearby along the Seward Highway or at Portage. Climbing takes an adventurous spirit, all ages and fitness levels welcome. No previous climbing experience necessary.

Learn to Rock Climb in Alaska

Rock Climbing with Ascending Path is an exhilarating experience that will be sure to be a memorable adventure for everyone. Rock Climbing trips are great for families and people of all abilities and ages. Technically experienced rock climbing guides teach everyone from first-timers to advanced climbers at Tram Rock a few minute walk from the Hotel Alyeska. Non-climbers may watch for free. This a top-roped climbing experience amidst the towering trees of temperate rainforest.

Helicopter Ice Climbing & Caves

In partnership with Alpine Air Alaska, Ascending Path offers Heli access guided glacier caves and ice climbs.The Robinson R44 Helicopter has an outstanding safety record, are affordable, quiet and fuel efficient. Rates listed are per person.From the magnificent Hotel Alyeska in Girdwood, or in Portage if coming down by the fabulous Alaska Railroad- we group up – and take a short ride in a Sprinter van to our private landing zone in Portage Valley. After a heli safety briefing we hot load for a memorable scenic flight of about 10 minutes one way. Everyone has a window seat!

After landing on glacier ice, and once the heli leaves, we do a safety talk and crampon practice with your skilled and experienced guide. We typically schedule several hours to climb and discover amazing Ice features like: blue ice, crevasses, caves, rushing surface rivers, tubes, moulins, etc. Your guide will lead you to ice walls where a top rope anchor is set up to experience vertical ice climbing. You will finally feel the rush of what it’s like to be Spiderman when scaling ice walls. And then there’s the ice caves….! This trip is suitable for ages 13 and older.

No experience is necessary. This trip should be considered a “moderate activity”. We recommend that you are capable of a few hours of cardio and/or strength training exercise each day. Previous rock or climbing gym experience is recommended.
